Skincare inspiration from Chinese herbal medicine –red dates and lily flower roots

Red dates (jujube) is named “king of fruits.”  In Chinese the herb is calls “Hong Zao; and, in Latin, it’s the fruit of Ziziphus zizyphus. Herbal medicine believes that red dates nourishes the blood, replenishes body strength, and alleviate stress.  The herb is usually used in formulations and TCMs for treating anemia, stomach, anxiety, heart and lung diseases, memory loss, and high blood pressure.  It is believed to help improve the texture of the complexion.

Chemical composition wise, red date is packed with polysaccharides, Vitamins, 18 amino acids, iron, and calcium. See below list.  It is therefore praised by Chinese as “natural vitamin pill.”

Studies indicate that polysaccharides in red dates can remove free radicals (antioxidant), strengthen immune system, and inhibit cancer cells; iron helps the system to replenish red blood cells and maintain the elasticity of capillary blood vessels; triterpenoids can inhibit cancer cell growth; and cyclic adenosine monophosphate can dilate blood vessels, enhance myocardial contractility, and alleviate allergy.

For skin care purpose, make a habit of drinking red dates tea or eating red dates.  Red dates are fruits and therefore taste sweet, but not super sweet.  I like to put a few in my tea whether it is jasmine, oolong, green tea, or herbal tea.  Of course, you can always eat the dried fruits as a healthy snack or  chop the fruits in small bits and mixed it into your salad.

Lily flower root is called “Bai He” in Chinese.  The herbal medicine uses the roots of various plants from Lilium family including Lilium lancifolium thunb, Lilium bronii F.E. Brown var, viridulum bake, and Lilium pumilum DC.  The herb includes various alkaloids including colchicines, protein, beta carotene, polysaccharides, and vitamins.

Chinese herbal medicine believes that lily flower root is capable of soothing lung and clearing heat.  You will usually find this herb in formulations and TCMs for treating cough, sore throat, low fever, insomnia, restlessness and irritability.

Fresh lily flower root tastes like a crunch vegetable with just a touch of bitterness in it.  Most Asian super markets carry it at their vegetable sections.  You can stir fry it with other vegetables or used it in soup.  The herb helps to clear the toxin out of your system and reduces the incidence of acne and inflammation on your skin.
