A few ancient Chinese facial mask recipes

Seven whitening Mask (七子白)

Seven whitening Mask is a mask recipes originated in Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE).  It is believed that the mask recipe was originally created inside the Emperor’s palace and was kept as a beauty secret from common folks for the sole use of emperor’s wives and daughters.  The recipe was eventually leaked and spread into the general population.  The effectiveness of the mask was praised over thousands of years of use and is now one of the most popular beauty recipes in China.

Here is the recipe: mix the fine powder of equal amount of these ingredients together: Largehead Atractylodes Rh(白术), Angelica Root (白芷), I have discussed this herb in my past post), Bletilla striata
(白芨), Ampelopsis Radix (白蔹), white peony root (白芍), Poria cocos(Schw.) Wolf. (白茯苓), dried silk worm (白僵蚕, yes, silk worm!  Don’t feel grossed out-how far are you willing to go for a picture perfect skin), and pearl powder.  For the herbs that I have not discussed yet, I will talk about each of them in my future post.  You should be able to find these all these ingredients online.  There are a lot websites selling Chinese herbal powders.  You can also copy-paste the Chinese characters into your search engine.

Add a few drops of honey into the mixture.  Add water and stir in one direction to provide a soft paste.  I would add probably a little egg white or gelatin in to help the paste to adhere to the skin.  Spread over the face.  Wait until dry.  Rinse off with warm water and end with a splash of old water.  Pat dry.  The mask is excellent in improving skin tone, removing dark spots and scar, clearing pimples, and rejuvenating the skin.

Snow white mask (白雪面膜)

This is a mask recipe from an ancient Chinese medicine book, Essential Recipes for Emergent Use Worth A Thousand Gold (备急千金药方).  The book was written in Tang Dynasty (June 18, 618 – June 1, 907).

Here is the recipe: Pour a liquor or wine of your choice into a broad-mouth jar.  You can use any liquor or wine you like.  I like to use fruit wines such as apple wine, plum wine, lychee wine.  You should be able to find all these wines in any Asian super market.  Submerge eggs into the liquor and wine and seal the jar for 28 days.  Then take the egg out and spread egg white over your face before bed time. Wait until dry.  Wash off with warm water and end with a splash of cold water. Pat dry.  Use the mask every day for a week.  The mask moisturizes the skin, evens skin tone, and removes wrinkle.

Pimple removal mask

This is a mask recipe from an ancient Chinese medicine book, Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergency (肘后备急方).  The book was written in East Jin Dynasty (AD 317-420) and is the first emergency medicine book in Chinese.

Here is the recipe: Pour black vinegar into a broad-mouth jar.  Submerge eggs into the vinegar and seal the jar for 72 hours.  Then take the egg out and spread egg white over your face before bed time. Wait until dry.  Wash off with warm water and end with a splash of cold water. Pat dry.  Use the mask twice a week.  The mask is excellent in preventing and removing pimples and scars.
