An ancient face wash powder recipe from Chinese herbal medicine--Xishi Jade Face Powder


There are four famous beauties in ancient China—one named Xishi.  The story was told that Xishi was given a face wash powder recipe by an old herbalist and it was this wash powder that gave Xishi her famous milky jade-like skin.  The herbs prescribed in this recipe emphasize dark spot removal and purifying function.  Here is the recipe from an ancient Chinese herbal medicine book “Palace Pharmacopeia:”

Recipe: Baiji (Bletilla striata), Angelica root, Bailian (Ampelopsis japonica), white silkworm, Baifuzi (Rhizoma Typhonii), Tianhuafeng (Radix Trichosanthis), Gansong (Radix et Rhizoma Nardostachyos), Shannai (Kaempferia galangal), Maoxiang (hierochloe odorata), linglingxiang, Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia divaricate Schischk), Haomeng (Ligusticum sinensis Oliv.), green bean, and Zhaojiao (Gleditsia sinensis Lam)

Instruction: mix ingredient herb powders together and store in cold place.

Use as a face wash: pour quarter size amount of the powder mix into your palm, mix with small amount of water or milk into a soft paste.  Message the paste onto your dry or wet face.  Add water or milk as needed to help spread the paste. Basically, use the paste as a face wash. 

Use as a face mask: mix powder with egg white and milk.  You can add a little honey too.  Mix thoroughly into a soft paste.  Spread the paste evenly onto face.  Wait for 20 min or until the paste is half dry.  Use once a week. 

Caution: because the recipe contains herbal medicine, please do test the recipe on a small patch of skin before using it on your face to make sure you are not allergic.

Functions: the recipe clears and whitens the skin.  It’s especially effective in removing dark spots and smoothing scars.

Herbal ingredient functions:
Baiji: nourish the skin and dry surface skin sores. It is not only used to whiten skin but also used to cure chapped hands and feet;

Angelica root: moisturize and whiten skin, Facilitate blood flow to facial capillary blood vessels and improve complexion;

Bailian (Ampelopsis japonica): cure the surface sore blisters, remove dark spots, cure acne, detoxify and smooth skin, and shrink pores ;

White silkworm: contains enzymes that can increase skin permeability and inhibit scar tissue formation;

Baifuzi (Rhizoma Typhonii): moisturizes and whitens skin, removes scars and freckles;

Tianhuafeng (Radix Trichosanthis), cools the skin, damp the skin inflammation, and and clears acnes;

Gansong (Radix et Rhizoma Nardostachyos): stimulates the skin to accelerate blood circulation, improve skin nutrition;

Shannai (Kaempferia galangal): increase surface capillary blood flow, anti-aging;

Maoxiang (hierochloe odorata): cool and clear skin, sooth inflammation;

Linglingxiang: promote blood circulation, increase skin nutrition;

Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia divaricate Schischk): clear skin; and

Haomeng (Ligusticum sinensis Oliv.): clear and dry sores.
