Skincare Inspiration from Chinese Medicine: Dandelion medicine acne mask


Yep, these annoying little weeds flowering all over your front lawn are herbs.  Dandelions have been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years.  Dandelion, with a Latin name Herba Taraxaci, is known for its detoxification activity and can be found in formulations for treating various infections.

Chemically, dandelion contains Taraxasterol, Inulin, Pectin, Taraxol, Stigmasterol, β-Amyrin, β-Sitosterol, taraxerol, Taraxacerin, Taraxacin, choline, organic acids, and other healthy nutrients such as carotene (an antioxidant), Vitamins such as Vitamin A, C, and D, proteins, minerals, lipids, carbohydrates, and trace elements.

 For skincare use, dandelion leaves have been used to treat eczema, dermatitis, and is known to sooth and calm agitated skin.  The root has anti-inflammatory effect; and the flowers can be used to remove dark spots and even skin tone.

Here is a mask receipt using dandelion to treat acne.

Ingredient: 5g green beans, 10g dandelion, 1g honey

Process: boil dandelion whole herb in hot water for about 10 min.  Decant the water out and place the green beans in to the water.  Add slow heat until the green beans are well cooked.  Decant the liquid into another container.  Add honey.  Let the mixture cool.  Use as a mask for treating acne prone skin.
