Skincare inspiration from traditional Chinese medicine—Salvia (Dansheng)

Salvia, also known as red ginseng, purple salvia, or red roots, is a well-known and well used medicinal herb in traditional Chinese medicine.   The herb is the root of the plant, Salvia miltiorrhiza, and has been studied in many traditional Chinese medicine books including Compendium of Materia Medica and Divine Farmer's Materia Medica.

The herb is known to be anti-aging, promote blood circulation, regulate menstruation, nourish the nerves, reduce inflammation, sooth pain, dilate coronary arteries, improve myocardial ischemia condition, lower blood pressure, and treat insomnia. In addition, modern research has shown that Salvia also reduce platelet aggregation, reduce blood viscosity and regulate the circulatory system and is a safe and reliable natural medicine for treating cardiovascular disease.

Salvia is one of the most commons herbs you will find in the skincare receips from the traditional Chinese medicine.  Here is a skincare mask recipe including Salvia:

Ingredients: Salvia (10grams), Radix Scutellariae (baical skullcap root, 15 grams), gardenia (15 grams), honeysuckle (15 grams), and honey

Direction: soak and boil all the herbs in hot water for 2 hours.  Decant the liquid into a different container.  Mix the liquid with honey and egg white to make a facial mask.  Use twice a week.

Effect: the mask is effective in clear skin of acnes, promote capillary circulation, promote complexion, and remove wrinkles.
