Skincare Inspiration from US Patent No. 6,174,519: beta glucan skincare receipts for protecting skin from UV damage
This patent
provides skincare formulations using beta glucan to inhibit the skin damage
induced by ultraviolet radiation. β-Glucans are polysaccharides of D-glucose monomers linked by β-glycosidic bonds. They are a diverse group of molecules
that can vary with respect to molecular mass, solubility, viscosity, and
three-dimensional configuration. They occur most commonly as cellulose in plants, the bran of cereal grains, the cell wall of baker's yeast, certain fungi, mushrooms and bacteria.
Traditionally, beta-glucans
have been used for treating skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, wrinkles,
bedsores, wounds, burns, diabetic ulcers, and radiation burns.
In addition to beta-glucans, the
formulations in the patent also include moisturizing agent such as panthenol
and antioxidants such as grape seed extract, Vitamin C, and superoxide
dismutase, which act synergistically with the beta glucan to improve cellular
viability and reduce the production of inflammatory prostaglandin PGE2 in
skin exposed to ultraviolet radiation. The formulations can also include
Vitamin A (retinol) and Vitamin E (tocopherol), which also act synergistically
as an antioxidant in the skin.
