In my last post, we looked at Mary’s Kay’s patent
filings, which include a lot of natural product/botanical based
formulation. This post will take a look
at Mary Kay’s products to see if the product strength matches up with their
patent filings.
Mary Kay organizes their skincare products into 9 lines: Mary Kay Botanical EffectsTM Skin Care, Age-fighting, cleaners, miniaturization, classic basic skin care, MKMEN® skin care, VELOCITY® skin care, lip and eye care, and specific needs.
So, what can you learn from Mary Kay’s formulation? Take a lot of antioxidants. Antioxidants soak up free radicals, which are the main cause for aging and many diseases. Antioxidants benefits to your body are more than skin-deep: they are not only anti-aging and anti-wrinkle but also anti-cancer and boot immune system.

The Botanical EffectsTM Skin Care line seems
to be their newest product line. The product line is further divided to
products for dry skin, normal skin, and oily skin. Each includes Cleanse, Freshen, Mask, and
Hydrate. Each product claims “a special
antioxidant rich botanical complex.” The website does not say more than
that. By looking at the patent filings
that I listed in my last post, my bet is that the Botanical EffectsTM
Skin Care line is based upon U.S Patent Application No. 20070166275, titled
“Compositions comprising kakadu plum extract or acai berry extract.” If someone has bought the products, the
bottle should list the ingredients.
Please feel free to let me know if “kakadu plum extract” or “acai berry
extract” are listed.
Kakadu Plum (Latin: Terminalia
ferdinandiana) is a flowering plant native to Australia. Its Vitamin C concentration may be as high as
1000-5300 mg/100g, possibly the highest known of any fruit. Mary Kay’s formulation claims antioxidants,
one of which should be Vitamin C from the Kakadu Plum berry extract.
Acai Berry cames from the acai palm tree
(Latin: Euterpe oleracea), which is native to Central and South America. Acai berry contains anthocyanins and flavonoids,
which are both antioxidants. Mary Kay’s
formulation claims antioxidants, which should include anthocyanins and
flavonoids from the Kakadu Plum berry extract.
